The P1 port: a window into your electricity consumption

Smart meters have 2 physical communication ports, P1 and S1, also known as client ports.

• The P1 port sends electricity consumption data once a second. In Brussels, the P1 port is activated by default, so there's no need to request its activation. You can connect a device to it directly.
• The S1 port sends data much more frequently, in the range of a few thousand times per second. As the high frequency of the S1 port is usually unnecessary for domestic use, it is not used in Brussels.

Port P1 is activated by default in Brussels.

Get a grip on your electricity consumption

You can connect an energy management system to the P1 port. In practical terms, this means apps, smart thermostats and other devices. Instead of getting a reading of your energy consumption once a year, you'll know immediately what you're consuming in real time, and possibly what you're producing. 

Smart energy management

Some devices also allow you to control the operation of your electrical equipment according to your current consumption. For example, you might want to recharge your electric car at the same time as your solar panels are generating electricity. Put an end to waste and make way for optimum energy management.

Don't forget the technical requirements

The P1 port gives you unprecedented control over your energy consumption. Exploiting its full potential, however, may require a certain amount of technical expertise.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of these energy management devices require a Wi-Fi connection, which can also pose certain difficulties underground.
