In Brussels, we started the large-scale 'rollout' of smart meters in October 2023. By the end of 2030, almost all Brussels residents should have a smart meter.
The time will soon come for all of us. You will then receive an email or letter from us. Please note that in some cases, the installation of a smart meter is compulsory. If you already want to benefit from the possibilities offered by the smart meter, you can also make a request.
When will the smart meter be installed?
- New connections
When a new connection or additional meters are installed. - Compulsory replacement (to be requested yourself)
In the following cases, you must request the installation of the smart meter yourself:- Energy production (e.g. via solar panels)
- Installation of a charging station
- installation of a battery
- Energy sharing
- As part of the roll-out
You will receive a letter or email indicating the proposed date for the installation of your smart meter. - Do you prefer to get a smart meter now?
You don't have to wait to be included in the roll-out schedule. You can request a smart meter now, free of charge.
How much does it cost to install a smart meter?
In Brussels, smart meter installation is free for all replacements.
When is there a charge? There is a charge for installing a smart meter in the following cases.
- New electrical connection (e.g. in new buildings).
- Installation of additional meters.
Please note
If additional work is needed to replace the meter or if you request extra changes (e.g., changing the power of the meter, moving the meter, ...), these services are chargeable!
Regulated deployment
The rollout is being carried out in accordance with the legal framework set out in the Ordinance on the organisation of the electricity market in the Brussels-Capital Region passed by the Brussels Government.
The installation of the smart meter in Brussels - in agreement with the regulator, Brugel - meets the requirements of the European Energy Efficiency directive.
