A conference to shape the future of Schaerbeek-Formation

On 3 December, Sibelga was delighted to host a conference organised by the Brussels Port Community (CPB), which brought together the main players involved in the reflection on the redevelopment of the Schaerbeek-Formation site.

The event highlighted the various challenges surrounding the largest land reserve in Brussels (around 60 ha), as well as the opportunities it offers to support a sustainable and connected future for the capital.

Schaerbeek-Formation: why a strategic site for Brussels?

Situated in the north of the capital, the Schaerbeek-Formation site is a veritable hub. Connected to the canal, road and rail networks, it offers unique opportunities to become a centre for the ecological transition, multimodal logistics and the circular economy.

A sustainable energy vision

As a key player in the energy sector in Brussels, Sibelga has undertaken to work closely with stakeholders to shape the energy infrastructure of the future. In this regard, Sibelga has stressed the importance of initiating a collective reflection on the energy supply of the site as soon as possible: should we go full electric, develop heating networks, or opt for mixed solutions? These strategic choices will have to be anticipated ‘by design’ to support the energy transition and achieve the decarbonisation targets.

A project for the future

Schaerbeek-Formation is therefore much more than a land reserve: it is just one example of the opportunities Brussels can seize on to build a sustainable and connected capital. This project also illustrates the importance of solid partnerships between public and private actors, to design and co-construct solutions, in particular energy solutions, that are adapted to the challenges of the future.
